Need help with math, language, logic, science, or technology? I'm here for you!

Aloha, friend! My name is Lucas Jarrett, and I’m an online tutor! If I had to characterize my approach to helping people learn in simple terms, I would say that I believe education is a matter of teaching adaptability. The ability to adapt, or the capacity to change, is the fundamental skill of learning all things. We must always be prepared to adopt new ways of being. When we study life, we study the infinite; and when we study the infinite, our mindsets must be similar, or else we will not see everything that we could have seen. To realize that learning is the art of changing is to begin learning everything more easily. My primary goal is to help my students see and apply this awareness when studying anything they hope to do well. I have professional experience teaching many subjects, including arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, philosophy, biology, history, psychology, music, billiards, writing, research, literature, English, Java, Python, HTML, CSS, SQL, and more. Furthermore, I’m happy to offer insight into cognitive habits that often bring academic trouble, such as perfectionism, motivation, inattention, depression, and anxiety. I do not limit my educational strategies to any single methodology; I believe that every individual has a unique path in life, and I therefore work to be responsive to the specific, immediate needs of my students. Context is everything. If I'm trying to help a student become a better reader and writer, I may recommend that we explore good literature together; if I am helping someone prepare for a test in geometry, good practice problems and instructional resources will likely be part of the process. I tutor many subjects not listed here, so feel free to ask about anything! If I know how to help in a reasonable timeframe, I will help! 🙂 Note: I offer discounts to people who have financial need or pay in bulk. Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss options if my posted rate is beyond your budget!

What is Biology?

Biology is one of the natural sciences. It focuses on living organisms and includes a wide variety of concepts, from physical structures of cells and chemical processes to physiological mechanisms and evolution. Biology studies the structures, processes, and functions of living organisms and how they interact with their environment.

Bio is derived from the Greek word bios meaning life or living organism. The beginning of biology can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Babylonians, who developed a very basic understanding of living organisms about 4000 years ago. However, the ancient Greeks also believed that matter was made up of smaller entities, such as atoms. In this view, different forms of matter, such as water, food, and air, were separate entities.

The academic field as it is known today has a long history, dating back to ancient times, although it came to prominence in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The word was first used in the 1700s by a Swedish scientist, and then by a German who translated Carl Linnaeus' work. The increase in the use of the microscope, in the 1600s and 1700s, led to scientists' explorations of cells, bacteria, and other tiny organisms. Many biologists do not consider themselves 'biologists', and some consider a specific branch of biology as a specialized field.

Biology is a big field to study and explore. There's a lot you can learn about, and there are many opportunities in life to leverage what you learn. With so many different branches in the field of biology, a private biology tutor can help you feel comfortable as you examine topics in any of these. Some of the different topics in the overarching biological sciences include the study of the environment (ecology), animals (zoology), genetics, plants (botany), and many more. Evolutionary biology and research is well-known. The field of biology also includes topics like how drugs work in the body and how the body's immune system works. The list below outlines a few of the branches of biology but is not an exhaustive list.
Common subdisciplines of biology:
- Ecology
- Biochemistry
- Botany
- Molecular biology
- Immunology
- Zoology
- Pharmacology
- Neuroscience
- Microbiology
- Evolutionary biology
- Cell biology
- Genetics

Learning Biology?

Learning biology can be broken down into several stages. First, it involves developing an appreciation of the “big picture” of the subject, including basic science. These include biology concepts such as life forms, genetics, and evolution. For instance, if you want to know how cells work, you have to be able to understand how cells function in an ecosystem, which includes environmental factors. This can start with learning about cellular energy and how the energy circulates in the environment. To understand this further, you also need to know about the role of proteins in the cell. This is where research and experiments become crucial. For instance, we need to know how to grow new cells that look and behave like the body’s cells.

Common Biology Homework Curriculum Topics

The majority of biology problems in each grade can be solved by using the same basic mechanisms and concepts. Thus, biology homework problems can be used as a springboard for discussion or as a jumping off point to investigate more in-depth topics and related concepts. Here are some examples of grade-appropriate biology homework questions:
- What is embryology?
- How are the body’s cells organized?
- How are the liver and the lymphatic system connected?
- What are the parts of the heart and blood vessels?
- In biology, are chromosomes identical?
- What causes cancer?
- How can biology be used to increase overall intelligence?
- How can we monitor the brain and its function during illness?
- What are birth defects?
- How do blood cells develop?
- Who are bones made of?

Biology and Exam Testing Tips

There is no doubt that biology is a very difficult subject to grasp. This is especially true if you do not understand the concepts and how they are interconnected. The subject of biology has been used in both exam and assessment questions for a long time. The problem is that this was sometimes done haphazardly.

Biology students will likely face a number of standardized exams throughout the years from high school through graduate school. These tests have attributes that make them different from regular classroom tests, and when you prepare for them, it's a good idea to do more than just content review. Your biology tutor can help you learn valuable test-taking techniques and strategies that can help you demonstrate your true ability level in the subject. These might include strategies to learn time management skills, how to review test’s structures, or even how to quickly eliminate questions in multiple choice exams.

Some standardized exams for biology students include:
- AP Biology – AP level classes provide high school students the opportunity to take entry-level college/university classes and can potentially earn credits that allow you to skip introductory-level college courses. The final AP Biology exam assesses subjects like the chemistry of life, cellular energetics, gene expression and regulation, and more.
- CLEP Biology – CLEP exams allow college students to earn credit by demonstrating current knowledge, allowing them to skip over the earliest classes in a subject to save on tuition and graduate earlier. The Biology CLEP tests will focus on subjects such as molecular and cellular biology, organismal biology, and population biology.
- GRE Biology Subject Test – This test is taken by undergraduate students who plan to apply to a graduate school program in almost any major science field. The GRE biology test consists of approximately 188 multiple choice questions. The content of the test is organized into three major areas: cellular and molecular biology, organismal biology, and ecology and evolution. The Biology Subject test includes material evaluating your understanding of metabolism, organelles, chromosomes, immunobiology, plant structure and reproduction, and so on.

What is the fastest way to memorize biology?

One good study tip that works for most people is to have a friend (or sometimes, a family member or a child) record a couple of sentences on your desk and then practice these sentences every day. In addition to practice, you should use flashcards to get a good overview of the material.

How do I prepare for a biology exam?

If you have a history of high test scores in other subject areas, you might be wondering what, if any, strategy you should employ for preparing for your biology exam. I would suggest that you examine your study patterns in other subjects and use them as a framework for your biology exam preparation. Remember, for certain students, biology is a skill-based subject that requires the application of knowledge learned in other subjects. In other words, your biology test may be a 'breadth' test, so to speak, in that the topics covered will include a diverse range of topics that go beyond what is covered in the core curriculum. This breadth is much more difficult to cover in a short period of time, so plan to spend a good chunk of time each day studying and revising.

Why Hire a Biology Tutor Near Me?

It's usually in sophomore year when students take actual biology courses. That's a great time to begin looking for a 'biology tutor near me' or 'biology tutoring near me,' because that's about the time when you start focusing on biology as a career. A biology tutor can help you manage test anxiety and show you time management techniques that you may want to employ to ensure that you work through as many of your test/exam questions as possible during the time allotted to help maximize your scores.

Even if you're a student learning about biology earlier than university and want to get a head start on your science education, getting a biology tutoring is a great option. Biology tutors can help you learn key concepts to ensure you truly understand the key foundational concepts that future year’s build upon. They can also help you with practice tests, verbal quizzes, flashcards, and so much more. A biology tutor can use a variety of approaches that work best with your learning style.
