Grad student with 10+ years experience in science offers lessons in organic chemistry and biology

Tutor Information

About

During my time as a graduate student in chemistry (University of Sussex), I was also employed as an Associate Tutor. In this role, I helped supervise students during lab practicals, taught them how to use laboratory equipment, and showed them how to follow synthetic procedures from the literature. I also helped supervise master’s students during their final year research projects. I often marked lab reports and assisted my supervisor with the smooth running of seminars. I enjoy helping people and it makes me happy to watch students master new concepts. I previously obtained an MSc in pharmacognosy from the UCL School of Pharmacy (2014) in London. This program entailed a combination of courses touching upon topics in natural products chemistry, pharmacology, and ethnobotany. My final project involved screening natural and synthetic compounds against bacterial strains. I also have 3 years (2010-2013) of experience working in a pharmacy where I dispensed medications under a pharmacist’s supervision, so I am familiar with the many classes of medications. I graduated from Old Dominion University (2012) with a BS in biology (major) and chemistry (minor). Aside from the core biology courses, I also took electives in botany, ethnobotany, and plant ecology. After graduating, I spent a year working with rare cultivars of orchids in a private botany laboratory. This entailed tasks such as sterile plant tissue culture and inducing polyploidy in orchids using the drug colchicine.

My research involved the synthesis of 3-nitropyridines, beta-carbolines, and delta-carbolines. I am currently working on writing my thesis and hope to graduate within the next 6 months.

UCL School of Pharmacy

2013 - 2014
Master of Science, Pharmacognosy
This program consisted of topics in natural products chemistry, pharmacology, and ethnobotany.

Old Dominion University

2009 - 2012
Bachelor of Science, Biology
I completed my BS with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. I graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2012.

Work Experience

University of Sussex

October 2015 - April 2019
Associate Tutor
I assured the smooth operation of undergraduate laboratory work and also helped master’s students during their final projects. During this time I learned how to teach new lab techniques to people with no prior experience. I also helped professors run lectures or workshops and was responsible for grading lab reports under strict deadlines.

Institute of Anti-Aging Research

September 2012 - September 2013
Laboratory Technician
I mainly performed plant culture work with various rare species of orchids. I also maintained an extensive database of plants, seeds, and tissue cultures.

Rite Aid Pharmacy

July 2010 - September 2013
Certified Pharmacy Technician
I created and maintained patient healthcare records, dispensed prescription drugs under a pharmacist’s supervision, and processed insurance claims.
