About

I aim to help students attain goals effectively and efficiently through smart teaching practices. I believe, "Understanding beats Memory", and therefore I focus on the conceptual clarity of my students. I believe, "Understanding of the basics is the key to success", and therefore with my students I always stress on starting from the basics and progressing step by step. I believe, "Hard work beats Intelligence", and therefore my first lesson to students is always focussed on the importance of hard work and practice. I graduated from University of Sheffield, UK with PhD in Mechanical Engineering and a focus on Additive Manufacturing. MS Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech Atlanta, Georgia USA with a focus on Control Systems and Energy Systems. Got my BS Mechanical Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan. I aspire to be a role model for my people who live in Shangla the most backward district of KPK, Pakistan. Since my O' Levels I taught in my village schools during the summer vacation. I helped kids prepare for their exams understand the basic concepts of science. I travelled to USA and UK for my own education and gained a perspective of teaching methodologies in the best schools of three different countries. I am a self-motivated Engineering professional desiring to help raise the level of understanding of every student I can reach. I have the ability to analyze information quickly, look outside existing boundaries to identify implications and linkages and propose creative solutions. I am a dynamic leader capable of direct and open communication, seeking diverse input and persuading students by the vigor, sensitivity, and clarity of my arguments and actions. In my experience helping students understand the concepts of science by realizing the link of science to everyday life, is very effective. I am a firm proponent of education being absolutely necessary for quality life, and try to impart this to all my students.

Education

University of Sheffield

2013 - 2017
PhD, Mechanical Engineering
Research Focus Area: Evolution of Stress in Titanium Aerospace components fabricated using Selective Laser Melting Research Aims and Objectives: Understanding the effect of SLM parameters on stress build up and mechanical properties. Devising in-situ stress reduction strategies. Finding an optimum combination of parameters that will minimize the residual stress as well as maximize the mechanical properties. Retrofitting the machine with high temperature bed so as to propose enhancements in the future machines based on the effects of high bed temperature on residual stress and mechanical properties. Understanding the geometrical dependence of residual stress and identifying areas of high stress concentration. Applying stress reduction strategies to areas with high stress concentration so as to propose enhancements in future machines to have the capability of varying the process parameters during the build. Overall the objective is to show the trade off a designer has to make when choosing parameters based on the effect of SLM parameters on residual stress and mechanical properties.

Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA

2009 - 2011
MS, Mechanical Engineering
Majored in Energy Systems and Controls Minored in Management

University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan

2000 - 2004
BSc, Mechanical Engineering
Third best undergraduate project award, Fall 2004

Work Experience

Varsity Tutors LLC

July 2019 - June 2023
Private Tutor
I worked with undergraduate and graduate students to achieve excellence in their academic courses and research projects through one on one sessions.

University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar

October 2017 - present
Assistant Professor
I teach core Mechanical Engineering courses to Seniors and supervise design projects besides teaching Graduate courses to MS students.

University of Sheffield, UK

March 2017 - October 2017
Post Doctoral Research Assosciate
I worked as a Research Associate in Layered Extrusion of engineering Metal Alloys (LEMA) using SemiSolid Thixotropic Feedstock project. This involved understanding the basic concepts of thixotropic extrusion. I designed an extruder that heated metallic feedstock and applied mechanical shearing to control viscosity for thixotropic extrusion. Extruding selected feed-stock from novel thixotropic extrusion system and assessing final parts for residual stress formation and mechanical properties is the end goal of the project.

Tutor Hunt, UK

May 2014 - September 2017

I worked with undergraduate and graduate students to achieve excellence in their academic courses and research projects through one on one sessions.

University of Sheffield, UK

May 2014 - March 2017
Graduate Teaching Assistant (Part Time)
Supervising laboratory work and tutorial sessions for different modules which included experiments at undergraduate level.

First Tutors, UK

March 2014 - September 2017
Private Tutor
I worked with undergraduate and graduate students to achieve excellence in their academic courses and research projects through one on one sessions.

TWI Technology Centre Yorkshire, UK

May 2012 - March 2017
Part Time Post Graduate Researcher
I was working as a Post Graduate Researcher on a core research project, which involved: Understanding the effect of SLM parameters on stress build up and mechanical properties. Devising in-situ stress reduction strategies. Finding an optimum combination of parameters that will minimize the residual stress as well as maximize the mechanical properties. Retrofitting the SLM125 machine at University of Sheffield, with high temperature bed so as to propose enhancements in the future machines based on the effects of high bed temperature on residual stress and mechanical properties. Understanding the geometrical dependence of residual stress and identifying areas of high stress concentration. Applying stress reduction strategies to areas with high stress concentration so as to propose enhancements in future machines to have the capability of varying the process parameters during the build. Overall the objective was to show the trade off a designer has to make when choosing parameters based on the effect of SLM parameters on residual stress and mechanical properties.

George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical, Georgia Institute of Technology

May 2012 - August 2012
Research Assistant
Worked as a lead Control Research Engineer on a Hybrid Hydraulic Bus Research project. The focal research aim was to use Hydraulic Mechanism to store the energy recovered from braking as it is a more efficient way of storing the recovered energy rather than converting it into electrical energy and storing in batteries as in Hybrid Electric vehicles. My main responsibilities included: Programming a Single Board RIO microcontroller using LabView FPGA to control the source of energy that the bus uses during travel, designing the wiring the diagram for controller interface with the bus and implementing the system on board. This work gave me an significant knowledge and work experience of industrial control systems and software design methodologies.

George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical, Georgia Institute of Technology

August 2009 - January 2012
Graduate Teaching Assistant (Part-Time)
Supervising Lab Work for Experimental Methodology course which included experiments ranging from the most basic topics of measurement and calibration devices to advanced topics of dynamics, signal processing, thermodynamic and acoustics measurement at undergraduate level. Assessing lab reports and technical writing assignments.

Shangla Construction Company

October 2004 - December 2008
Mechanical Engineer
Supervision of electro-mechanical projects.
