My current studies encompass three fields: Newfoundland history, medical history, and environmental history, primarily in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. My current research is focused on the establishment of a series of hospitals across the island between 1936-1954.

This was an interdisciplinary program, in which we studied various political, cultural, historical, etc aspects of the region, and its place within Canadian and international contexts. My thesis was a biographical study of the life and work of Dr. Cluny Macpherson, a Newfoundland physician in the early twentieth century.

Most of my coursework focused on Canadian and European history in the twentieth century, though I also took courses about African and South American history. I did a minor in Classics. My honours thesis examined the experiences of Canadian women in the Second World War.

This was an interdisciplinary degree, so I studied a lot of different subjects - biology, chemistry, geology, geography, and ecology, for example, as well as economics, religious studies, sociology, and anthropology.
