Passionate and Patient Math Tutor with 6 years of Experience

Hello, my name is Bridgette, and I am 27 years old. I have tutored in math for six years, first in Arizona while obtaining my bachelor's degree and then in California after I graduated from university. I received my bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Northern Arizona University (Go Lumberjacks!). As part of my coursework, I took education classes and was a student teacher for a semester. I am currently working on my associate's degree in Mathematics as preparation for graduate school. I currently tutor Elementary Math up to Algebra II, Integrated Math 1-3, CBEST Math Test Prep, GED Math Test Prep, and Science for elementary and middle school students. My teaching method is to meet students where they are. I focus on student understanding rather than drilling them on practice problems. I ask students questions that guide them thru the concepts rather than lecturing them. This method has worked well for me, as many of my student's grades and confidence have improved. What I enjoy most about tutoring is helping students find their love for learning. Once a student finds the desire to learn and expand their understanding of the world, they become a contributor to society. I also like to make it fun. When a student finds learning enjoyable, everything else comes naturally. If you are looking for a patient and passionate tutor to work with you or your child, send me a message.

Experienced Math Tutor

I have had about two years of experience in tutoring kids of many grade levels at local after-school programs. Although I enjoy various school subjects, math is my favorite because of my love of numbers. Moreover, I get a thrill out of applying problems involving math and numbers to the real world and students' real-life experiences. For example, I figured that several middle school students at one of the organizations I worked for, the Japanese Community Youth Council, enjoyed playing video games, so I occasionally incorporated those into my demonstrations and examples. Additionally, I often worked with students in groups of two to four, and this encouraged collaboration among them. Consequently, the students’ grades increased by at least 25%. Furthermore, towards the close of the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, the organization rewarded me for my contributions with certificates of recognition. At another program, 826 Valencia, I tutored kids ages 6-16 during the fall 2015 semester, providing another opportunity to engage and collaborate with students. For example, one student needed help with problems related to linear equations. The assignment contained the term “Figure 0”, the latter of which seemed foreign to me. But after I recalled terminology in my high school math classes, both of us were able to determine that Figure 0 was its y-intercept. Overall, I felt proud that I could help a student simplify a challenging concept.
