I have enjoyed educating students for more than two decades. I have been licensed to teach math and English in public schools at the middle- and high-school levels and was a high school math teacher for seventeen years in Massachusetts. I have taught small group math, algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, precalculus, and calculus. I've taught English, too, and I can often help students with other subjects, as well. I've always found tutoring and extra help to be a favorite part of working as an educator. In fact, I became a teacher after tutoring for several years and loving it. I have been through the experiences my students are having, from school level through the the MAT for university and university admissions interviews. I enjoy maths because it becomes a puzzle you can solve logically, with surprising and beautiful patterns emerging from nothing. My tutoring style is concentrated on the idea that understanding must be built on understanding. To that end I make sure I listen to the students and find where they are confident, and where they need help. If they are struggling with a concept, I find that going back to where they do grasp the ideas and working up from there can have great effect. I also believe that memorizing equations and formulae is much easier if you are shown how they arise, so I try to include that before moving on to problems. I have been tutoring for 10 years, and won the Imperial College Excellence in the Support of Teaching and Learning Award in 2019. I have also attended workshops in the teaching of mathematics, on how to teach mathematics, especially algebra, to school aged students in a successful way. I am also able to provide tuition to support students in their university applications for mathematics by preparing them with transferable skills for the entrance exam process.
