I am an experienced elementary educator with 28 years of experience working with young learners. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Early Education and a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction, and I currently teach second grade. My expertise includes reading, phonics, reading comprehension, writing, spelling, vocabulary, and foundational literacy skills for students in grades K–5. Throughout my career, I have supported students with different learning styles, strengths, and academic needs. I believe effective tutoring begins with understanding where a student is currently and identifying the specific skills that need strengthening. I use individualized, age-appropriate instruction to help students close learning gaps, strengthen foundational skills, and become more confident and independent learners. My approach is patient, encouraging, and engaging. I want students to feel successful during our sessions while developing skills they can carry back into the classroom and use independently.

Offering a FREE 15-MINUTES INTRO SESSION to all new students! I'm currently a special education undergraduate student completing my degree in December 2022. I'm thankful to have had the opportunity to tutor through my university's literacy center, alongside the special education director, which led to a paid position at a local elementary school before covid-19 altered the format in which I could reach students. Each semester I continue to have the opportunity to build upon my teaching skills with students of all ages through 5 week field placements in my program. English, reading and language arts were my favorite subjects k-12, and I love finding new ways to make the content engaging for all learners.

I have had about two years of experience in tutoring kids of many grade levels at local after-school programs. Although I enjoy various school subjects, math is my favorite because of my love of numbers. Moreover, I get a thrill out of applying problems involving math and numbers to the real world and students' real-life experiences. For example, I figured that several middle school students at one of the organizations I worked for, the Japanese Community Youth Council, enjoyed playing video games, so I occasionally incorporated those into my demonstrations and examples. Additionally, I often worked with students in groups of two to four, and this encouraged collaboration among them. Consequently, the students’ grades increased by at least 25%. Furthermore, towards the close of the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, the organization rewarded me for my contributions with certificates of recognition. At another program, 826 Valencia, I tutored kids ages 6-16 during the fall 2015 semester, providing another opportunity to engage and collaborate with students. For example, one student needed help with problems related to linear equations. The assignment contained the term “Figure 0”, the latter of which seemed foreign to me. But after I recalled terminology in my high school math classes, both of us were able to determine that Figure 0 was its y-intercept. Overall, I felt proud that I could help a student simplify a challenging concept.
