Former University Instructor Specializing in Discrete Mathematics and Proof Writing

Does discrete mathematics feel completely different from the mathematics you studied before university? Many capable students understand the definitions but do not know how to begin a proof, choose an appropriate proof technique, or turn their reasoning into a solution that earns full marks. That transition is my specialty. I taught mathematics at the University of Manitoba from 2005 through 2023, including extensive experience teaching first-year discrete mathematics. My graduate work focused on graph theory and combinatorics. Because I have taught and graded this material at the university level, I understand both sides of the problem: how students typically get stuck and what an instructor expects in a complete, well-written proof. I can help with propositional and predicate logic, quantifiers and negation, sets, functions and relations, direct proof, contrapositive and contradiction, mathematical induction, counting and combinatorics, the pigeonhole principle, recurrence relations, elementary number theory, graph theory, and mathematical writing. A typical session begins by identifying the precise point of confusion. We clarify the relevant definitions, select a strategy, and work through an example together. You then try a related problem while I provide guidance and immediate feedback. I teach students how to reason through problems rather than simply supplying answers. I do not complete graded assignments, tests, or examinations on a student's behalf. University of Manitoba MATH 1240 students are especially welcome, and I work with university discrete mathematics students throughout Canada and internationally. I currently accept a small number of online students.

Former IB and Ontario-certified teacher | 15+ years of experience

I am a former Ontario and IB Mathematics teacher with experience teaching and tutoring both IB and Ontario mathematics. My approach is relational, supportive, and responsive to each student’s needs. I aim to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking intellectual risks, and developing confidence in their mathematical thinking. I also believe mathematics is most meaningful when students can see how it connects to the world around them. Wherever possible, I link mathematical ideas to real-world phenomena, helping students move beyond memorizing procedures toward understanding how and why mathematics works.

Neuroscience graduate with dual minors in Biology and Chemistry!

I have a B.Sc. in Neuroscience and Mental Health from Carleton University, Ontario, Canada, with dual minors in Biology and Chemistry. I graduated with the Faculty of Science University Medal, meaning I had the highest graduating GPA in the Faculty of Science. I worked during my entire university career in neuroscience labs dedicated to neurodegenerative disease (such as Parkinson's disease and ALS) and received multiple research awards. I was also selected for a prestigious internship at University of Toronto. I have extensive knowledge and passion for neuroscience and the adjacent sciences, but I also have a great deal of hands-on experience in the lab applying neuroscientific techniques. This gives me a foundation beyond classroom knowledge. I previously taught virtual STEM classes to students aged 10-18, so I am very comfortable with virtual tutoring.

Subjects: AP Biology, Advanced Cell Biology, Basic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, General Chemistry I, General Chemistry II, Genetics, High School Science, IB Sciences, Neuroanatomy, Neuroscience, Scientific Writing

MIT PhD Student & Teaching Assistant | Math, Physics & Statistics Tutor

Hi, I’m Julia! I’m a second-year PhD student in Operations Research and a teaching assistant at MIT. I have seven years of tutoring experience, working with students from elementary school through third-year university. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto with a 4.00 GPA and a 97.6% average, receiving a university-wide scholarship recognizing me as the top female science graduate. I then pursued graduate-level mathematics coursework at the University of Cambridge before beginning my doctorate at MIT. Alongside my teaching assistant role at MIT, I have served as a teaching assistant for Calculus at the University of Toronto and Astronomy at OCAD University. I teach school mathematics, single-variable and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, logic, set theory, proof writing, introductory probability and statistics, introductory physics, classical mechanics, and quantum information and computation. My approach is patient, clear, and tailored to each student. We can unpack challenging concepts, work through practice problems step by step, prepare for exams, or strengthen your foundations. My goal is to help you understand the reasoning and become more confident solving problems independently. Lessons are online at $70 CAD per hour.
