Experienced teacher and tutor with MS in Mathematics

Perspective on Education: I have devoted my entire professional career to working with students both in and out of the classroom. From tutoring my peers throughout my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mathematics, to teaching college courses of all levels, to mentoring high school students, I have had the privilege of working with students of all ages, from various backgrounds, and from around the globe. With over 15 years of experience, I have developed an approach to teaching that is centered around developing the core of a successful student. I work to build a solid fundamental base, but more importantly I seek to impart the ability, confidence, and passion to seek out knowledge for the sake of personal growth. Regardless of your background or what topic you are learning, I bring an approachable, adaptable style to my work that develops a rapport with students that ultimately brings out their best. Math Specific Background: Despite never really being “into” math at a young age, I always excelled in the subject. By high school I accepted my fate as the resident math help and aided the school with peer tutoring and even joined the traveling math team for competitions. At university, I was inducted into the honorary mathematics fraternity, Pi Mu Epsilon. During my final two years as an undergraduate, I traveled to multiple mathematics conferences and gave talks on topics including, but not limited to, the mathematics of toilet paper. My senior year I received the Wilbur and Burdella Stuckey Carl Mathematics Prize for outstanding achievement in mathematics. After receiving my BS in Mathematics, I was offered a scholarship at the University of Akron to continue my education and teach simultaneously. In 2010 I earned an MS in theoretical mathematics and I have been teaching at universities while tutoring individuals ever since.

Trouble with Algebra or Precalculus? I succeeded in math, and you will too!

I’m Devin, and I’m here to boost your math scores! Inspired by the machinations of mad scientists in science fiction films and video games, I realized early on as a kid that I wanted to study science and math. A homeschooled child, I quickly took the reins to learn on my own and attended high school online through Florida virtual school. I self-studied for the PSAT exam, through which I won a National Merit Scholarship. A number of AP exams later, I attended New College of Florida, the honors college of Florida, where I worked as a teaching assistant for Genetics and General Chemistry. After earning my bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, I dove back into test prep. With a strong GRE score, I was accepted to the Computational Biology PhD program at the University of California Berkeley. There, I quickly realized that a life in the lab wasn’t for me. Instead, I decided to use my talent in the test center and the classroom to help others achieve their own academic success. As a homeschooler in college, I quickly realized how the typical classroom experience can fail students. I struggled to grasp new concepts through my instructors’ lectures. As they spoke on and on in front of the class, I would often have to give up on understanding what they were talking about. It was only after a lot of homework and one-on-one meetings with my instructors that I was able to succeed in those classes. That experience informs my approach to tutoring. I’m not going to talk at you while trudging through a presentation. We’re going to work problems together. I’m here to support and guide you, not lecture you. When you run into trouble, I’m going to pinpoint your difficulty and show you how to overcome it. We’ll keep going until you can solve these problems on your own. If you need more practice after a session, I’ll direct you to plenty of extra problems to polish your skills. You’re going to have the confidence to handle whatever a class throws at you next. Let’s get started!

Math, Science, and Reading Tutor

I am a current fourth year medical student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. I earned an M.S. in Medical Physiology at Case Western Reserve University and a B.A. in Biological Sciences at Cornell University with a minor in Psychology and concentration in Animal Physiology. I have tutored elementary to high school students. I also have experience tutoring college students. My areas of expertise include math up to 9th grade, biology, anatomy and physiology, psychology, grammar, and reading and writing. My favorite part of teaching is watching my students gradually improve on skills and concepts that they struggle with. That "aha!" moment truly is priceless. I recognize that everyone learns differently, and I have always worked to tailor my teaching style to what is most effective for my student. I come up with fun and creative ways of learning and remembering material, and genuinely want to see students succeed!
