Hello, my name is Emi. I live in Tokyo and work in an office while also teaching Japanese. I majored in Economics and have over 20 years of experience in administrative roles. I earned a master’s degree in art studies while working, and currently, I am writing my doctoral dissertation. About My Lessons I offer practical, personalized lessons based on my professional and academic background. Lessons are mainly in Japanese, but I can support you in English if needed. You can learn comfortably at your own pace. ◆ Conversation Lessons: Small Talk to Office Japanese For learners who want to speak more naturally in daily or workplace settings We’ll practice small talk, polite language, email/phone expressions, and choosing words based on context and social distance. ◆ GENKI Practice Lessons For beginners using or reviewing GENKI I/II We’ll focus on key grammar and sentence patterns, especially parts that are hard to do alone, and apply them in conversation. ◆ Reading Lessons (News, Essays, Novels) For learners who want to read deeply and expand vocabulary Using real texts, we’ll build reading skills, explore cultural nuance, and discuss content to improve expression and thinking. ◆ Academic Japanese For university students and researchers We’ll study academic vocabulary, structure, logic, and prepare for reports, papers, and presentations. My Teaching Approach Through learning English and Spanish, I’ve come to appreciate how deeply Japanese reflects culture and values. Some expressions are hard to translate directly. I am an educator who has worked with students in various settings for over twenty years. I have tutored students in both history and writing at the college and high school levels I specialize in preparing students to write excellent essays for their AP exams in US History, Art History, World History and European History. Over the last decade I have taught World, Latin American, and United States histories at local universities, as well as online classes at a global university. In addition, I have taught upper-level history and also writing classes as part of the general education curriculum. I have experience teaching history to high school students enrolled in an Early College program at a Community College. I also score AP US History exams for the College Board every summer so I am familiar with essays. I am currently an adjunct history professor completing a dissertation in history at Ohio University. While completing my MA in History at UNC Charlotte, I was the instructor of record for two sections of a Liberal Studies class for freshman as part of a grant to improve student retention rates. The curriculum for this class required instructing writing and research skills as well as encouraging the students to develop effective strategies for academic success. UNCC’s Office of Disability Services awarded me their Outstanding Faculty/Staff award for my efforts in the classroom that semester. At UNCC I completed a Teaching at the College and University Level class that expanded my pedagogical competence, especially taking into account various learning styles. At OU I completed a World History Colloquium that addressed various approaches to teaching a world history class. I believe that my knowledge and training will help you better understand historical concepts and write more proficiently.
