Retired Elementary School Teacher with 25+ years teaching regular and special education

I am a retired teacher. I taught elementary school; both special education and elementary education for 27 years. I am National Board Certified in Teaching Students with Exceptional Needs. I spent the last several years of my teaching career working with struggling learners; specifically in reading and phonics. I have had a great amount of success helping students succeed in school by using reputable reading/phonics programs while also incorporating patience and dedication. I love working with students who need extra help and support to build their reading, phonics, and math skills.

Trouble with Algebra or Precalculus? I succeeded in math, and you will too!

I’m Devin, and I’m here to boost your math scores! Inspired by the machinations of mad scientists in science fiction films and video games, I realized early on as a kid that I wanted to study science and math. A homeschooled child, I quickly took the reins to learn on my own and attended high school online through Florida virtual school. I self-studied for the PSAT exam, through which I won a National Merit Scholarship. A number of AP exams later, I attended New College of Florida, the honors college of Florida, where I worked as a teaching assistant for Genetics and General Chemistry. After earning my bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, I dove back into test prep. With a strong GRE score, I was accepted to the Computational Biology PhD program at the University of California Berkeley. There, I quickly realized that a life in the lab wasn’t for me. Instead, I decided to use my talent in the test center and the classroom to help others achieve their own academic success. As a homeschooler in college, I quickly realized how the typical classroom experience can fail students. I struggled to grasp new concepts through my instructors’ lectures. As they spoke on and on in front of the class, I would often have to give up on understanding what they were talking about. It was only after a lot of homework and one-on-one meetings with my instructors that I was able to succeed in those classes. That experience informs my approach to tutoring. I’m not going to talk at you while trudging through a presentation. We’re going to work problems together. I’m here to support and guide you, not lecture you. When you run into trouble, I’m going to pinpoint your difficulty and show you how to overcome it. We’ll keep going until you can solve these problems on your own. If you need more practice after a session, I’ll direct you to plenty of extra problems to polish your skills. You’re going to have the confidence to handle whatever a class throws at you next. Let’s get started!

Math, Science, and Reading Tutor

I am a current fourth year medical student at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. I earned an M.S. in Medical Physiology at Case Western Reserve University and a B.A. in Biological Sciences at Cornell University with a minor in Psychology and concentration in Animal Physiology. I have tutored elementary to high school students. I also have experience tutoring college students. My areas of expertise include math up to 9th grade, biology, anatomy and physiology, psychology, grammar, and reading and writing. My favorite part of teaching is watching my students gradually improve on skills and concepts that they struggle with. That "aha!" moment truly is priceless. I recognize that everyone learns differently, and I have always worked to tailor my teaching style to what is most effective for my student. I come up with fun and creative ways of learning and remembering material, and genuinely want to see students succeed!

Former Teacher with Elementary Education Specialty

Hi there, I am a former teacher with 5 years total of classroom experience, with roles as an elementary school teacher, teacher intern, and tutor (elementary and college tutor). I currently work as a contracted elementary school tutor in Florida. My ultimate goal as a tutor is to meet students where they are and supplement the hard work they are already doing in the classroom through building relationships, understanding student goals, and customizing tutoring sessions for the needs of my students. As an elementary school teacher, I was able to gain hands on experience with differentiating lessons to meet my students' needs. Adapting the district’s given curricula to fit each student’s learning style and complement my classroom dynamic is a skill I have continued to hone as a tutor. Additionally, the professional development courses required as a teacher has bolstered my knowledge of research-based practices that I have been able to put to use as a teacher and tutor. Courses such as LETRS (a reading course designed to give educators a strong background in the science of reading) and other reading and math trainings geared to my district’s curricula have also been integral in shaping my teaching methods. My current role as a tutor has a focus on reading and math interventions for students on grade level and those who are below grade level. I do this in small groups to give students more individualized instruction, something I have done throughout my career as an educator. Though my teaching experience is mostly from elementary education, I have tutored at the college level and have amble experience working with higher-level writing assignments, including research papers, PowerPoint presentations, annotated bibliographies, etc. English is a subject I excelled in during high school and college, and my knowledge base has prepared me to help with reading and writing assignments for high school and middle school. Looking forward to working with you!

I use storytelling, creative writing, discussions, and interactive activities to make lessons lively and effective, while also giving individual attention and remedial support where needed. I enjoy lesson planning, designing assessments, and tracking student progress to ensure every child improves at their own pace. Turning “I Don’t Get It” Into “I’ve Got This!”

I am currently pursuing an MSc in Supply Chain Management at EMLV while living in Paris. I specialize in teaching English with a focus on IELTS preparation and academic writing. Because I am an international student myself, I understand the practical pressure of hitting a specific score or meeting a tight deadline. My approach is grounded in what actually works in a university environment, not just textbook theory. What we can work on: IELTS Prep: We will focus on the specific logic and structure required to hit Band 7+, particularly in the Speaking and Writing sections. Academic & Business Writing: I use my creative writing background to help you polish essays, business reports, and assignments so they sound professional and flow naturally. Conversational English: Building the confidence to speak clearly in academic or professional settings. I keep my lessons straightforward and focused on results. I don’t use "fluff" or academic jargon; I provide the direct feedback you need to fix your errors and improve your score quickly. If you need a tutor who understands the reality of studying and working in an international environment, let’s get to work.
