TESOL CERTIFIED! I am currently a senior at the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary, with an expected graduation date in 2024. During this past summer, I successfully completed the TESOL certificate program, specializing in adolescent English Language Learners (ELL) teaching. My journey in education began during high school when I started tutoring, and I've continued to expand my teaching skills as a pre-service teacher, gaining valuable experience through a month-long, in-person teaching practicum with a class of more than 25 students. Throughout my teaching and tutoring experiences, I've discovered a profound passion for instructing elementary-level English Language Arts and Mathematics. I view these two subjects as the cornerstones of a student's future academic success. Consequently, I'm enthusiastic about developing tailored strategies for each individual student facing difficulties in these areas. I am specifically interested in assisting students who are English Language Learners because I was once a newcomer to Canada as well. I can relate profoundly to the emotional and academic challenges my students are encountering. With my expertise in ELL education and experience teaching ELL, I have learned the most recent English learning theories and gained the appropriate tools to help my students regain their confidence in a brand-new education system. In my leisure time, I enjoy making handicrafts and exploring new travel destinations. I am also a fan of Japanese anime.

Experienced Math Tutor

I have had about two years of experience in tutoring kids of many grade levels at local after-school programs. Although I enjoy various school subjects, math is my favorite because of my love of numbers. Moreover, I get a thrill out of applying problems involving math and numbers to the real world and students' real-life experiences. For example, I figured that several middle school students at one of the organizations I worked for, the Japanese Community Youth Council, enjoyed playing video games, so I occasionally incorporated those into my demonstrations and examples. Additionally, I often worked with students in groups of two to four, and this encouraged collaboration among them. Consequently, the students’ grades increased by at least 25%. Furthermore, towards the close of the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, the organization rewarded me for my contributions with certificates of recognition. At another program, 826 Valencia, I tutored kids ages 6-16 during the fall 2015 semester, providing another opportunity to engage and collaborate with students. For example, one student needed help with problems related to linear equations. The assignment contained the term “Figure 0”, the latter of which seemed foreign to me. But after I recalled terminology in my high school math classes, both of us were able to determine that Figure 0 was its y-intercept. Overall, I felt proud that I could help a student simplify a challenging concept.

Biochemist with a Decade of Teaching Experience!

Hi! My name is Katie, I consider myself to be a lifelong collector of knowledge, and find that I learn as much while teaching as my students do! Some of the knowledge I've collected; -Over a decade of childcare experience, including tutoring and mentoring -My B.S. Biochemistry from Gonzaga University -A published article in a Nature subsidiary (Neupane, T., Chambers, L.R., Godfrey, A.J. et al. Microbial rhodoquinone biosynthesis proceeds via an atypical RquA-catalyzed amino transfer from S-adenosyl-L-methionine to ubiquinone. Commun Chem 5, 89 (2022)) -Several ski instructing certifications; Level 1, Child Specialist 1, and Level 2 -2 years of business management experience -Lab management experience at Plug Power, a hydrogen power cell company -A composite year of solo global travel time -Conversational proficiency in Spanish (currently learning French and Japanese as well!) I'm beyond excited to be tutoring again. The ability to challenge your own viewpoints and help others challenge theirs is a big part of my life, and I want to bring that creativity into helping you (and me) learn something new! My teaching style tends to be very fun and creative - I put a lot of import into each student's learning style and making sure material makes sense in the long term, and not just for the next test. Each student is an individual and as a one-on-one tutor I have the delight of getting to make sure learning feels that way!
