I’m a patient and dedicated tutor who loves helping students turn math struggles into successes. Whether your child has learning differences or simply needs a steady, experienced guide who connects well with young people, I’d be honored to help them build confidence and skill in math. Many of my students stay with me from middle school through high school, and I treasure those long-term relationships — watching their abilities, independence, and problem-solving confidence grow over time. My love for teaching began in Baltimore, volunteering as a math and reading tutor for inner-city youth — a rewarding challenge that sharpened my ability to spot learning gaps and adapt lessons creatively. Since then, I’ve logged over 10,000 hours of tutoring, using platforms such as Wyzant and Varsity Tutors, and in-person with more than 100 local students. Before becoming a full-time tutor, I spent nearly 20 years as a molecular biology and genetics researcher at Johns Hopkins Medical School and Duke Medical Center, co-authoring articles in top scientific journals. My background in laboratory research demanded precision, logical problem-solving, and clear communication — the same skills essential for mastering mathematics. I help students see that math is more than numbers; it’s a powerful tool used to solve real-world problems in science, technology, and beyond. I bring this mindset to every lesson, helping students build both skill and real-world appreciation for math.

Not only did I personally score a 2380/2400 on the SAT (800 Reading, 800 Math, 780 Writing) during my sophomore year of high school, but I have ten years of experience tutoring SAT/ACT test prep extensively (mostly online). I have helped my students succeed on the SAT/ACT and receive admission to a number of prestigious universities, including the University of Pennsylvania, West Point, and Cornell University.

Hello! My name is Shanelle and I teach economics and algebra primarily to middle school, high school, and college students, but I can teach anyone at any age. I have a passion for teaching and I’m excited to help you work through any economic or algebra problems you encounter! I have multiple degrees in economics including a B.A. in Economics from University of Chicago, M.S. in Applied Economics from Johns Hopkins University, Doctorate of Economic Development from New Mexico State University, and a PhD in Water Science & Management with a focus in Water Economics from New Mexico State University. All of these degrees had a strong mathematics focus, so I have extensive experience with mathematics subjects such as algebra. I have worked as a tutor while getting my degrees and I have also taught university classes in microeconomics and macroeconomics while getting my PhD. I have also taught community college courses before and after my PhD. I tailor my teaching to the individual and engage with you by igniting curiosity and integrating understanding at a deep level by improving critical thinking skills, experiential understanding, practicing practical applications, and connecting practical understanding to abstract, theoretical concepts. I am a polymath and I have a variety of interests beyond economics and mathematics. I am a musician and I sing, play guitar, and play piano. I also play tennis and enjoy hiking. I also have a variety of other interests. I bring this polymathic holistic understanding into my teaching methods. Feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or to schedule a lesson. I look forward to meeting you and helping you reach your goals!

I'm a math tutor dedicated to inspiring students to gain the mathematical knowledge I've acquired, so they can achieve their optimal potential. I'll provide structured, organized lessons suited to each student's needs and ensure the concepts are understood. Students should show me the math topics, and I can look them over and share my knowledge with them. I can teach students tricks and shortcuts to help them learn difficult math subjects with ease. With what I learned in high school and college, I can help them understand math concepts and pass their courses with ease. The teaching methodology is based on patience, clear explanations, and participation. I believe that every student learns differently, so I adjust my teaching style to match each student's needs and pace. My goal is not only to help students solve problems but also to help them understand the underlying concepts of mathematics so they can apply what they learn independently. The lesson begins by identifying the topics or assignments the student needs help with. I ask these students to explain what they already understand and which step they are having the most difficulty with. This would help me focus on the areas that need the most attention. Next, I'll describe the concepts by laying out a step-by-step procedure and working through a few examples. I demonstrate different methods for solving problems, including helpful tricks. After describing the concepts, we work through several practice problems together, and I encourage my students to ask questions throughout the lesson. As my students each get into their comfort zone, they solve problems on their own while I provide them with useful feedback right after. If my students ever make mistakes, we review them together to understand why they happened and how to avoid them in the future. At the end of each lesson, I'd summarize the key concepts, answer any remaining questions my students have, and recommend additional practice if needed.
